YOUR LECTURERS

All music staff are also professional musicians and specialists within their area.  It is useful to know what they do so that you know who to ask for specific information.  For example, if you want to know something very technical then Grant is your man. If it's anything to do with logic or Drum'n'Bass, ask Phil. If you have a burning question that is jazz related, Olly is very likely to know. Want to have a go with Ableton?  Consult Farz. Vocal technique? Find Chantal. Industry, performance or sound art?  That's Chloe. Post-punk, prog or guitars? You need Keith. We all have broad knowledge bases but you have the opportunity to ask a specialist in these fields, so use this to your advantage.

Keith Moline is your course tutor and also tutor to L2 Music. He is your main point of contact and will teach you performance and theory and then context in the second year. You can find out about his professional work HERE

ATTENDANCE & PUNCTUALITY
As a music student, we expect a minimum of 90% attendance and 95% punctuality from you.  If you are not here, you will not learn and are very likely to miss an assessment which will not be repeated.  If you are late, you will miss the start of a class where important information is given which will mean that you will not understand the rest of the lesson fully. If your attendance and punctuality fall below these levels, you are at risk of being withdrawn from the course. By signing your Learner Agreement, you have agreed to maintain high levels of attendance and punctuality. Good levels of attendance and punctuality are vital as a musician because rehearsals are very difficult without the full band present.

If you are ill or running late, you must call the attendance line BEFORE the start of your first class.

TUTORIALS
Each week, we have a tutorial session.  The format will vary week to week; sometimes we will have a guest speaker, you may do a workshop, we may have a group tutorial or you might be having a 1:1 tutorial to discuss your progress with me. Tutorials are compulsory so make sure that you know what is happening. During your tutorial, we will be updating your individual learning plan on ProPortal.

BEHAVIOUR
You are no longer at school. We expect you to behave as adults. When you enrolled on the course, you signed a learner agreement which binds you to following the college's policies and codes of conduct. If you fail to do this, you will be put into the disciplinary system. This is a multicultural community and we do not tolerate bullying, sexism, racism, homophobia or harassment of any kind. You can read the full policy HERE.

CLASSES
Your classes will usually be the same each week and it is important that you keep a copy of your timetable and allow enough time to get to the rooms. Some of your classes are on the 4th floor so you need to take this into account. Occasionally we will go 'off timetable' for shows and visits so you may need to be flexible.  Plenty of notice will be given.

ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK
You will be given a brief for every piece of work which will give you clear deadlines and information about what you will be graded on. Ticksheets will be given for all projects.  If you fail an assignment, you will have to request a re-submission from the awarding body (UAL). All units are graded pass/fail except the final performance which is graded pass/merit/distinction and is externally moderated by UAL.

SUBMITTING YOUR WORK
You will be assessed in a variety of ways.  All work and rehearsal diaries will be submitted on your blog. Assignment briefs will tell you what to label each post with so that teachers and the exam board can find it easily. Keeping a rehearsal diary is really important, as is production meeting notes.  it is your responsibility to remember to log these.  If you have a smart phone, I recommend installing the blogger app and getting into the habit of posting as you leave a class so that it is fresh in your mind. If you don't have one, then there are plenty of computers available for you to use around the building. You are also welcome to post during production meetings. ALL WORK SUBMITTED MUST BE YOUR OWN. By signing your learning and induction agreement you have agreed that you will only submit work created by you. Plagiarism is not tolerated.

Practical assessments will happen in class and during performances - videos of these will be made available to you via YouTube so that you can post them to your blog.

PERIPATETIC MUSIC LESSONS
We offer free instrumental lessons in voice, guitar, bass, drums and piano/keys. I will speak to you about these early in the course and lessons start after the Autumn half-term. There is a high demand for these lessons so it is important that you attend.  If you miss 2 lessons, you lose them and will be replaced by someone else.  Don't waste this opportunity! You can find out more about the teachers HERE

ACCESS TIME
You are able to book production rooms and rehearsal rooms for independent access at various times.  These need to be booked with Grant.  Information can be found HERE.
